Clients sockets are closed immediately after receiving valid response.
Don't wait for the first early HW TX timestamp to enable waiting for
late timestamps. It may take a long time or never come if the HW/driver
is consistently slow. It's a chicken and egg problem.
Instead, simply check if HW timestamping is enabled on at least one
interface. Responses from NTP sources on other interfaces will always be
saved (for 1 millisecond by default).
Allow NTP messages to be exchanged as a payload of PTP messages to
enable full hardware timestamping on NICs that can timestamp PTP packets
only. Implemented is the protocol described in this draft (version 00):
https://datatracker.ietf.org/doc/draft-mlichvar-ntp-over-ptp/
This is an experimental feature. It can be changed or removed in future.
The used PTP domain is 123 and the NTP TLV type is 0x2023 from the "do
not propagate" experimental range.
The ptpport directive enables NTP-over-PTP as a server and as a client
for all sources that have the port option set to the PTP port. The port
should be the PTP event port (319) to trigger timestamping in the
hardware.
The implementation is contained to ntp_io. It is transparent to
ntp_core.
Allow an IP family to be specified in the socket initialization in order
to globally disable the other family. This replaces the ntp_io and
cmdmon code handling the -4/-6 options and fixes a case where the NTP
client could still use a disabled family if the source was specified
with an IP address.
Allow SRC_MAYBE_ONLINE to be specified for new NTP sources and
connectivity setting to select between SRC_ONLINE and SRC_OFFLINE
according to the result of the connect() system call, i.e. check whether
the client has a route to send its requests.
Add new functions for processing of packets after they are actually
sent by the kernel or HW in order to get a more accurate transmit
timestamp. Rename old functions for processing of received packets and
their parameters to make the naming more consistent.
Server sockets are now explicitly opened and closed for normal NTP
server, NTP broadcast and NTP peering. This will allow closing the
NTP port when not needed.
Switch to NTP for presend as the echo service (RFC 862) is rarely
enabled. When presend is active, send an NTP client packet to the
server/peer and ignore the reply.
This also fixes presend with separate client sockets. The destination
port can't be changed on connected sockets, so the echo packet was sent
to the NTP port instead of the echo port.
If acquisitionport is set to 0 (default), create and connect a new
socket for each server instead of using one socket per address family
for all servers.
Allow different hash functions to be used in the NTP and cmdmon
protocols. This breaks the cmdmon protocol compatibility. Extended key
file format is used to specify the hash functions for chronyd and new
authhash command is added to chronyc. MD5 is the default and the only
function included in the chrony source code, other functions will be
available from libraries.
This is a verbatim copy of the files at that stage of the repository that was
built from the CVS import. It allows future development to see a bit of recent
history, but without carrying around the baggage going back to 1997. If that
is really required, git grafts can be used.
